Black Kurinuki Box No.198/24
Earthenware, unglazed
Height: 8 cm
Width: 15 cm
A small box made using the kurinuki technique, a traditional Japanese hand-carving method that involves hollowing out a solid block of clay. Perfect for storing spices, tea, incense, or small objects. The flame marks visible on the surface of black pottery result from the firing process, during which the piece is exposed to direct flames. This creates unique patterns that enhance its visual appeal. The piece was fired in a traditional wood-fired kiln using a reduction process, which gave the clay its characteristic black color. Finally, the surface was hot-treated with beeswax and a special oil to make it waterproof and to enhance the depth of its color.
