White stoneware, natural ash glaze

Height: 5,5 cm

Width: 9,5 cm

The box is made using the kurinuki technique, originating from Japan. This is a rarely practiced method in which objects are carved from a solid block of clay by cutting and tearing away fragments in order to preserve the material’s characteristic raw structure. The form is then cut open and hollowed out inside. The resulting box can serve as a container for tea, spices, incense or small objects. The surface is naturally glazed by the direct action of fire, highlighting the raw qualities of the clay. The firing process lasts around 24 hours, reaching temperatures of up to 1250°C, which makes each box a unique work of ceramic art. The inspiration for our forms comes from geology – we strive to reveal the full spectrum of clay’s textures, which can be not only soft and plastic but also earthy and rough like rock.
