Kurinuki Box No.95/24
Buff stoneware (blend of local and Lower Silesian clays), natural ash glaze
Height: 7,5 cm
Width: 9 cm
The box is made using the kurinuki technique, originating from Japan. This is a rarely practiced method in which objects are carved from a solid block of clay by cutting and tearing away fragments in order to preserve the material’s characteristic raw structure. The form is then cut open and hollowed out inside. The resulting box can serve as a container for tea, spices, incense or small objects. The outside is glazed, the inside is left unglazed. The inspiration for our forms comes from geology – we strive to reveal the full spectrum of clay’s textures, which can be not only soft and plastic but also earthy and rough like rock.
